Japan homestay day 5- Miyajima (Monday, December 29, 2008 / 6:35 pm)

Day 5- 12.12.08

Early morning that day, I first visited an oyster production place or factory (not too sure what it was called) because Hiroshima was famous for it. The place was filled with the smell of the fresh oysters which many of us could not really take it probably because it has the stink of a typical wet fish market too. But the process was quite a worth to watch. I watched earnestly as the staff there clean the fresh oysters etc.

Then, we were brought to this room where there was a chef who demonstrated the whole process of making some desserts. He called the desserts as sweets and they were made of flour. He carved them extrinsically and told us that later we were to try making some of them ourselves. That caused a commotion among us.

-those sweet dessert made by the chef-

Frankly speaking, I really had no talent in carving and making these kinds of desserts. My 'masterpiece' eventually turned out to be quite horrendous. lol. I couldn't even bear to take a second look though the taste was still ok.

After the dessert-making session, we headed to the dining place and ate our delicious lunch there. There were also freshly cooked oysters for us to eat. It was simply too wonderful.
I took several photographs over there especially there was a mountaineous landscape at the alfresco dining area.

Then, we got ready to head to Miyajima for famous tori (gate).

-me at the jetty, awaiting for the ferry to arrive to take us there-

Before I set off that day for Miyajima, my host mother told me that it was an amazingly beautiful place. However, she told me to watch out for deer if I were to carry any food or expose any bottle in front of them because they tend to chase after these things.

But I discovered a super interesting sight! Look at the toilet sign there. A second look at the sign sort of sent chills down my spine.

And finally, the greatly anticipated tori, partially submerged in the sea. It was low tide that day, so I could get to see large part of the gate.

-this photo is painstakingly taken by Jenice's help. I wanted to take a photo with the deer, but I did not dare to touch it nor stay very close to it, so I kept a distance with the deer and Jenice had to snap it while it was facing the camera too-

- I was posing for the local practice to clean one's hands with this water before entering the shrine-

- I was standing outside a shop and was interested in these five statues though I could not understand the words written on those boards-

- I found an ancient mailbox in front of the post office there-

- I took this pic coz it was too kawaii!!! hello kitty clock!!! actually the hello kitty were models of the famous momijimanju sold at Miyajima. Momijimanju tastes abit like mooncake.

It was a long day for me. I was very exhausted by the time I reached home. But often when I reached home, I got to entertain the little girl in my host family. Children of her age are always full of zest and never-draining energy so I ended up playing with her and practising piano together with her. Luckily I din throw away all my knowledge of my five years of piano. :)

Miyajima is definitely a place I'd love to visit again if I had the chance to go to Hiroshima.

Btw, this entry is solely on Miyajima as I realised that there are too many photos to blog for a day. So day 6 will have to wait till the next entry.
