The Cantonese Land (Tuesday, December 08, 2009 / 10:22 am)

I’m back in Singapore for almost a week!

The trip to Hong Kong brought back many prized possessions (of course), photos and many many thoughts about Hong Kong and Singapore.

Why? Simply because everytime people tend to do comparisons between the 2 countries because we are competitive in terms of economic standing and development etc.

Before I start on my photo entries…I will like to comment the following:

1.Hong Kong is great for shopping and eating but the people there are not so great after all.

2.They really have extreme types of people….Friendly and helpful ones (found in Hotels and Disneyland only) and super-duper rude ones who simply ignore you or sarcastically scold you. (I shall elaborate more on this in the later entries…)

3.They are generally pretty intolerant towards visitors (foreigners) who are not well-versed in Cantonese or do not speak with their Hong Kong accent.

4.You really have to walk fast in Hong Kong, if not they will just knock and bang against you and walked away with no sign of apologetic look. (It’s like the normal thing for them to do)

5.There are indeed policemen surveying all over the streets in groups (exactly what you see in those Cantonese shows) Some of them are really good looking!

6.You have to stand on the right side of the escalator (instead of the left side in Singapore) and people actually practised it well there. (Quite applaud-able)

7.There are no rows of trees like what we have in Singapore, in Hong Kong streets. No greenery amidst the high rise buildings or not even a single tree. And hence, I find that the air wasn’t as fresh as what you have in Singapore. I can smell traces of haze and pollution in the air.

8.You do not see toilets and dustbins everywhere in Hong Kong.

9.The roads are pretty narrow and there are really many vehicles. (Roads in Singapore usually have 3-4 lanes for each direction but for them, the usual ones only have at most 2 lanes)

10.On Sunday mornings, the streets in Hong Kong are so quiet and practically no vehicles on the road till 12 noon.

11.At 1pm, you can still see many shops starting to switch on their lights and push out their items to sell.

12.Going to Hong Kong restaurant for Dim Sum is a big knowledge!

Well…I guess I can go on and on. Next entry will be on my trip itself with pics!
